24-25 Teacher of the Year

Claudia Luna, (Coach Luna), has been teaching physical and health education at De Escandon Elementary for 3 years and is currently starting her 4th year. Coach Luna sponsors the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade after-school fitness enrichment program where students learn sports specific skills.  She has earned a master’s degree in occupational therapy from Texas Women’s University and a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from UT Pan American. Coach Luna worked in the field of occupational therapy for over 15 years, in settings including early childhood intervention, orthopedic sports rehabilitation, school settings and has assisted professors at the college level. Coach Luna has also competed in fitness competitions at the local, state and national level. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, weight training, challenging herself to do pull ups, running sprints, dancing, grounding, tending to her small vegetable garden and playing with her 2 dogs. Coach Luna loves her Powercat students & Powercat family and encourages her students to live an overall healthy lifestyle including increasing movement, eating healthy, staying physically fit, making good choices, displaying perseverance and excellent sportsmanship.
